St John’s
A grade II listed building, brought back to life through traditional methods and modern materials.
St John’s, a long-term client of SLG, was in need of extensive refurbishment work. The Grade II listed building is a former vicarage, sat in the heart of Chichester city centre, dating back to around 1870. The historical townhouse features local architectural styles such as traditional flint walls with decorative brick dressings, and served as a private family residence, and later, an historic beer house.
We’re proud to have brought the building back to life through our care and attention to the timber trim, glazing, and slate roof repairs. The original period sash windows, made from timber, were almost beyond economical repair requiring meticulous restoration using traditional methods & modern materials.
Due to St John’s being a listed building, we used Timber Repair Care resin systems - a long-lasting, sustainable approach that allowed us to preserve as much of the original timber as possible, rather than simply replacing it.
The biggest part of the transformation was the decorating, allowing us to really show off our skills with the finer details. The roof and flint-knapping patch repairs play an important role in preserving the structural integrity of this age-old building, protecting it from the elements it has withstood for generations.
We at SLG are proud to have played our part in preserving its character through care, craftsmanship, and expertise, helping to ensure the building remains protected for many years to come.
